Message from the Principal

Thank you for visiting South Prairie Elementary’s web page.  Our mission is to Empower All Learners to Succeed in Their World. Our teachers build relationships with students and their families, and strive to plan highly engaging, differentiated lessons that challenge students.

South Prairie is a Pre-K through Fifth Grade school with about  300 students. We have two classes at each grade level. Our Kindergarten through fifth grade instructional day starts at 8:30 AM, and ends at 3:00 PM. Our curriculum includes daily mathematics, reading, and writing. Science, social studies, physical education, art, general music, and technology are also taught at every grade level from kindergarten through fifth grade.

There are musical opportunities outside the school day. Orchestra is available after school and during weekly lessons for fourth and fifth grade students, while band is available after school and during weekly lessons for fifth grade students. Fourth and fifth grade students can also participate in morning choir, which meet Thursdays at 7:45 AM.

Our Out of School Care Program (OSCAR) is hosted at South Prairie from 7am to 6pm on school days. In addition to fun experiences, OSCAR staff members help with homework and provide learning opportunities for students outside the school day.  More information is available on the district website.

We have a very active Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) that supports education and creates fun family events.  The South Prairie PTO volunteers organize a very popular back to school night, fall book fair, spring book fair, and Fun Fair.  They also raise funds for field trips, educational supplies, books, and technology. We are always looking for new ideas and volunteers, so please feel free to join us at our monthly meetings.

South Prairie has several community partners who support local residents.  We host the meetings for several different Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops.  We also host two raised garden beds for the DeKalb County Community Gardens.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (815) 899-8290, or via email. Also, our Twitter feed is frequently updated, so please consider following us @SPELem.
