Safety and Security
Sycamore Community School District 427 takes the safety and security of our students and staff very seriously. The District has a Safety and Security Team that works to ensure the District is prepared and well-equipped to handle emergencies.
The Safety and Security Team provides a variety of training throughout the school year to faculty and staff. Some of these trainings are partnered with representatives of the Sycamore Police Department and/or the Sycamore Fire Department. These trainings help to improve their crisis management skills and help them gain confidence that if a real situation were to occur they would know what to do.
Illinois School Safety Drill Act
The District complies with the Illinois School Safety Drill Act. The purpose of this Act is to establish minimum requirements and standards for schools to follow when conducting school safety drills and reviewing school emergency and crisis response plans. The Illinois School Safety Drill Act also encourages schools and first responders to work together for the safety of children.
All buildings that hold students during the school day are required to conduct the following drills annually:
Fire Drills. The fire department must be present at one of these drills to observe and provide direction and feedback.
Severe Weather Drills. These are commonly referred to as tornado drills.
Bus Evacuation Drills. These are conducted by the District’s Transportation Center.
Intruder Drills. These are commonly referred to as hard lockdown or active shooter drills. These drills must be observed by local law enforcement officials. Our district follows the ALICE Response Protocol.
Each public school district, through its school board or the board’s designee, shall conduct a minimum of one annual meeting at which it reviews each school building’s emergency and crisis response plans, protocols, and procedures and each building’s compliance with the school safety drill programs.
